 Fall Guys: Ultimate Knock Out

Tired Of Guns and Grenades, Try this Cute and Cuddly Battle Royal

Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout Review

Fortnite, PlayerUnknown's Battleground, and Warzone have popularized the battle royal gaming. Another game has entered this genre and is giving these games a tough time, and it is not your usual last man standing Battle royal game.

Fall Guys: Ultimate Knock Out, has taken the internet and gaming community by storm. Fall Guys has truly unlocked the full potential of the last person standing format by painting cartoonish and childish costumes and maps in this wild and fierce genre.

My character in the game looks like Triceratops but the mind-controlling this silly looking character has only one objective and that is to win and the same is the case with each player in the match.

Fall Guys: Ultimate Knock Out maybe silly, adorable, and simple to learn but that does not mean it's a low stake game. Despite a silly and party game vibe, it's still a battle royal. For most of the match, I goof around and take my chances or stop and look at other players struggling just before crossing the finish line. Getting ragdolled or being tossed off the course by a mob of players trying to navigate through a narrow path just makes me laugh. But as I make my way towards the end of the final round I suddenly start taking the game seriously.

Unlike most games where you dodge bullets and bombs here, you will have to steer clear of monstrously overgrown oranges that are bombarded on you in just one of its two dozen mini-games. The vast majority of these games strike the perfect balance between fun and frustration. Couple it with vibrant colors and bubbly soundtrack and Fall guys manages to give you the same experience that you would expect from a battle royal game. You might punch the air when you win or screen at the screen when you lose, but either way, you'll be laughing.

Players Racing

The concept of Fall Guys might be familiar to those who have seen the shows like Takeshi's castle or Wipeout. Each round of Fall Guys begins with 60 players. Only the first 30 or so qualify and proceed to the next round, which is randomly chosen. Each level eliminates more players and in the end, the last person standing is given the crown.

The controls are simple with running, jumping, diving, and grabbing as your only tools to navigate the obstacle courses or to cling to your life in more survival centric mini-games. If you happen to be eliminated then you have the option to watch those remaining battle it out or you can start a new game.

Fall Guys triumphs because of its 24 highly enjoyable mini-games. There are a few different types of levels. Races are the most common, and sometimes you'll engage in several footraces with different obstacles in a single match. The obstacle courses have fans to knock players off their feet, ramps coated with slippery slime, vanishing floors or spinning balancing beams, walls that can be broken or not, and will knock you back on your butt or giant fruits tumbling down. You have to jump, dive, dodge through all these obstacles and make your way to the finish line before the time runs out.

The obstacle style courses are my spot for enjoyment, especially at the last as all the players desperately lunge for the finish line. I enjoy the chaos as too many players try to fit through small gaps or all jump on the same narrow platform. There are multiple paths to the finish line each with its own risks and rewards. In all the obstacle races you never feel like out of the race even if you are at the back of the pack. In Door dash the simple pleasure of passing through an opening and watching your opponent slam his face in the brick wall is unmeasurable.

Other levels divide players into teams to achieve a goal, and these team games are among the best and also the most frustrating. They are the best as you get to mess with other players, by grabbing them and disrupting their progress. While all this can be fun the game turns frustrating when the players on your team are not fully in support of winning.

Also, some of the games will require you to work alongside your competitors. As in See Saw, which is different from other races and can be frustrating from the beginning. the whole course consists of giant seesaws and you have to navigate your way while maintaining a balance with your fellow competitors. And it is frustrating to see how many people do not know how seesaw works.

One of the most fun and challenging mini-game is Slime Climb. It is more difficult than many other races and was the reason for most of my eliminations in the early hours of gameplay. Only a handful of people can qualify this round. The slime slowly climbs as you steer your character on a track full of obstacles and other payers trying to move at the same place as you. But this challenge can be mastered and I soon found myself able to succeed where I once so often failed.

That said, the mastery only came with a lot of online losses as there are no offline modes in Fall guys. There's no practice mode either to get the grips of two dozen events. More importantly, there is also on local co-op in Fall Guys. It feels like a miss to not have a split-screen local multiplayer or at least an AI competitor mode.

The game is most fun when played with friends, whether that be cheering for them after my elimination or laughing at them when they get knocked off by a giant banana. Fall guys only allow a party of four players at a time, which is to ensure that they all enter the same match. It would have been fun to host our own custom matches with all the people that we know. This feature for custom matches is on top of my wishlist for this game. Also, the team events sometimes do not pair you up with your own party members and you would have to face each other.

Thankfully all the frustration disappears when you manage to get the crown at the end. Whether it is literally grabbing it in the finale of Fall Mountain race or by being the last man standing in the Hex-a-Gone. There is a distinct sense of accomplishment that you feel after winning and it is at par with any battle royal game.

You also earn in-game currency by completing tasks. These are used to buy costumes and other cosmetic items for your character. You can buy this currency with real money but there is no pay to win aspect of the game only cosmetic items can be bought. The game gives ample chances to earn the in-game currency and I didn't feel the need to spend my own money.

Fall Guys: Ultimate Knock Out is free to play for Playstation Plus subscribers or can be bought on Steam.
