Chapter 1

What's happening?

Jay Patel laid on a king-size bed, which was still made up. The morning sun shone brightly through the sheer curtains, blinding him and causing him even more pain in his already throbbing head.

He shut his eyes and turned his head away from the light and dozed off again.

A few minutes later he opened his eyes again. The nightstand had a sliver lamp and a small note pad with the words: The Savy Hotel, London.

He had been beaten up. These were his first thoughts, as he stood in front of the bathroom mirror. His ribs radiated pain. He reached up and touched his swelled up head and quickly drew his hand away.

He tried to remember checking in but couldn't. And more: he didn't know who he was and when he came to London. He pulled up his shirt and saw a bruise, it was black in the middle and red on the putter edge.

He then reached in his pockets, the only thing in them was a thin paper. He pulled it out and examined it: Rajdhani Dhaba: Get free tadka dal with every order. On the back of it there was something scribbled:

SAKA@2KHU13

A code of some sort.

His head hurt too much for codes.

He kept the code on the bathroom slab and made his way to the living room. He picked up an apple from the fruit basket kept there. And took a big bite. He guided himself to the main door and peeped through the view hole and then went on to open the door. The corridor was so quiet that his own breaths seemed loud to him. He went back in to look for some more clues that could guide him about his identity or purpose of his being here.

He looked in the drawers and cabinets and found a key. It had 1774 engraved on it. And a keychain of The Savy Hotel was attached to it.

He went outside again to search for room 1774.

Who am I?

Why am I here?

These were the only things going through his head as he made his way through the unusually deserted hall. As he walked he read the room number in his mind: 1770, 1771…,1774.

He slid the key in the hole and went inside. The room was neat and clean. It looked normal at first glance. So he went further in and looked here and there.

Suddenly a man came from the bedroom.

Jay was so happy to see another live soul. His eyes examined him from top to bottom. The man looked to be in his mid- 30s. His body looked as if he worked as a bouncer at a high profile club and his face had a typical Asian cut. But his happiness was short-lived, he noticed the man's expression changing as he moved slightly towards the shelf on the right.

Jay noticed a gun kept there and in a sudden flash he knew what was happening. He sprang himself quickly towards the gun, the Asian man also jumped but his bulky body was not meant for such swift movements. Jay managed to get hold of the gun but his hands trembled. He shouted: Hands up! Raise your hands! Move back!

But the Asian didn't seem to understand anything. He also kept shouting something that Jay didn't understand. Their screams were getting louder and louder but nothing was coming out of them. Asian man jumped towards Jay and *baam*.

Jay fired the shot and the Asian hunk laid dead on the floor, blood started to ooze out from his body.

Jay stood still and suddenly snapped back to his senses. He ran to the bathroom and washed the gun and picked the small waste-basket, pulled out the plastic liner, and covered his hand, ensuring he didn't leave any fingerprints or DNA.

He searched the man for some IDs or anything helpful. The man's pocket held his wallet and a slip. In his wallet, he found a couple of IDs. Jay quickly grabbed them. The first one had the name Wang We, a Chinese national, working for Incarnation Therapeutics. The photo matched the pale face of the dead hunk that lay on the floor, in his own pool of blood. There was no occupation mentioned.

The second one had the name Jay Patel mentioned on it. He knew at once that this was his name, but seeing it brought no flood of memories, only recognition.

*Knock knock knock*

Jay was alarmed by this sudden arrival of someone, just when he started understanding the puzzle.
